Development Player Policy

Purpose

The purpose of development players is to allow junior players to further develop their game by allowing a second game per week to be played for the Marist Basketball Club.

Once development status has been granted by the ACT Basketball Competition Operations Group (COG), players may play in two grades within the same age group (e.g. Division 1 and Division 2) for the entire season.

ACT Basketball Criteria for Development Player status

Specific criteria must be met to allow Development Player status to be approved.

  • Up to two development players per team may be selected and nominated no later than 2 weeks after the start of a competition.
  • Development Player status is applicable only for the season nominated and is subject to review before and during that season.
  • A player would normally only be considered as a development player for one season within an age group.

Marist Basketball Criteria for Development Player status

Specific criteria must be met to allow Development Player status to be approved.

  • The lower grade team is the priority for the development player.
  • Players can only play as a development player in the immediate grade above, not two or more grades above.
  • The development player cannot be a consistent starting five player in the highest grade they are developing for.
  • As the intent of development player is indeed in developing and enhancing their skills using this status, their contribution to the higher grade is expected to be minimal.
  • The Development Player must attend the training sessions of the higher graded team for them to take the court.

Marist Basketball Development Player process

  • Applications can only come from the coach requesting the development player from a lower grade.
  • All applications should be made to the Registrar Marist Basketball Canberra registrar@maristbasketball.com
  • A final decision on the development player status will be made by the Marist Basketball Committee.
  • If coaches to not follow the above directives the Development Player status will be withdrawn.
