Marist Basketball Club competes in Basketball ACT’s Junior Premier League (JPL) and Juniors ‘Winter Season’ competitions.
New players: Competitive basketball is all about having fun, working as a team, and improving individual basketball skills. All Marist College Canberra students are invited to join Marist Basketball Club for the Winter Season.
Season dates: The Winter season runs from May to September, with training beginning in April.
Grades: Basketball ACT’s junior competitions cater for players of all ability and skill levels. There are grades for beginners (Divisions 5 and 6), developing players (Divisions 3 and 4), experienced players (Divisions 1 and 2), and representative-level players (JPL). Marist Basketball has teams across all grades in each of our age groups.
Age groups: Marist Basketball enters teams in four age groups: Under 12, Under 14, Under 16 and Under 19. Marist does not enter Under 10 teams, due to the limited number of U10 boys within the Club. We believe the boys’ development is best served by incorporating them into our U12 teams, based on their individual experience and skill levels. The Club requests Higher Age Player approval from Basketball ACT for each boy; and advises coaches and managers if they have Higher Age Players (U10s) in their team.
Team selection: Prior to the commencement of each season the Club Committee completes a team selection process. To align with Basketball ACT’s intent, Marist Basketball conducts whole-of-club player trials prior to the Summer Season, with limited ‘new player only’ trials conducted prior to the Winter Season. During the team selection process, the Committee will incorporate new players into existing teams and consider coaching staff recommendations for the movement of current players. Player and parent/carer patience is appreciated whilst our club volunteers work through this process. Once teams are finalised, team managers or coaches will contact parents and carers directly.
Volunteers needed: We will once again need coaches and managers to help run our teams this season. It is Basketball ACT and Marist College Canberra policy that all teams have a coach and team manager appointed prior to the team taking part in competitive play. Please use the link below to express interest in these roles.
Marist College Canberra Sports Policy: Please remember, boys who want to play competitive basketball are expected to play for Marist as outlined in the College Sports Policy.
